Making the Most Respected Companies list requires a company to demonstrate a mix of corporate competencies, with strong management as the attribute that matters most. Professional investors also cited ethical business practices, valuable products and services and strong stock returns. They also gave high scores for companies that treated customers and employees well.

The scoring was determined by assigning a point value to each of four categories: Respect Highly, Respect, Respect Somewhat and Don't Respect. The average score determined the ranking, using the percentage of Respect Highly votes to break ties.
